Why weight loss isn’t always a good thing

I know weight is such a sensitive topic, but think about how any type of weight loss is praised by those around us. Whether its about you or someone else… we end up internalising it as a positive achievement.

🚫 Why this myth is unhelpful:

It's essential to recognise that weight isn't the only measure of health.

Rapid or extreme weight loss, often achieved through restrictive diets or unhealthy behaviours, or even just a few days of sickness can be harmful to our bodies physically and mentally.

Long-term unintentional weight loss can be a sign of an underlying medical condition.

Weight loss achieved through unsustainable methods (such as restrictive dieting) can take a toll on our physical and mental well-being, leading to feelings of deprivation, guilt, and shame.

It can also perpetuate the harmful belief that our worth is tied to our size, undermining our self-esteem and body confidence.

🌟 What you could do instead:

  • Shift your focus from weight loss to health-promoting behaviours that nourish your body and mind, such as balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and stress management.

  • Seek support from compassionate professionals who understand the complexities of weight and health.
